Workshop: CBT for borderline personality disorder - updating knowledge and practice.

Workshop Leader Information:

Professor Kate Davidson is a Fellow of the BPS and a graduate of University of Edinburgh where she completed her clinical training and PhD.   She is Director of the Glasgow Institute of Psychosocial Interventions, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.  She has worked with individuals with personality disorder since 1992, developing CBT for antisocial and borderline personality disorders and for those who seriously self harm.  She has carried out a series of research studies including randomised controlled trials in NHS settings to assess the effectiveness of CBT in these groups of patients.  She is Editor of Personality and Mental Health with Ken Silk (USA) and Roger Mulder (NZ) and past President of the British and Irish Group for the Study of Personality Disorder (BIGSPD) and a Board member of the International Society for the Study of Personality Disorders.

CBT significantly reduces the number of suicidal acts, symptoms and negative core beliefs in individuals with borderline personality disorder in comparison with usual NHS treatment for BPD (BOSCOT: Davidson et al, 2006). It is also considerably cheaper. With her research group, she has recently completed a six year follow-up of patients from the BOSCOT trial. From a recent MRC funded pilot RCT of 52 men, CBT is also a promising treatment for men with antisocial personality disorder: it reduces violence towards others, harmful alcohol consumption, and improves attitudes towards others and social functioning.

Key Learning Objectives:

Workshop participants will learn the following:  Adaptations of the CBT model to personality disorders, formulating a case within the model and how to share this with patients, how to work on underdeveloped behaviours and develop new adaptive beliefs.  Participants will be also update their knowledge of the evidence base for psychological treatment for BPD and ASPD.

Training Modalities:

Mini-lecture, case discussions, practical exercises.
