Complex Trauma in Homelessness Guide launched
Today (15 July) saw the launch of a Good Practice Guide to meet the psychological and emotional needs of people who are homeless. The Guide is a joint venture from the National Mental Health Development Unit and the Department for Communities and Local Government.

The Guide describes effective ways of recognising and meeting the psychological and emotional needs of those who have experienced homelessness, are sleeping rough or living in insecure accommodation, in particular young people and rough sleepers with histories of complex trauma/personality disorder. The Guide outlines the national policy context, the research evidence that informs developing practice, and explores the issues for service providers and commissioners.
Dr Nick Maguire, Chartered Clinical Psychologist and Deputy Director of the PG Dip in Cognitive Therapy at the University of Southampton, and his team were contributors to the Guide, which highlights CBT and DBT as possible treatments.
The Guide can be downloaded here.
Three of the case studies involve CBT-based interventions - see pages 68, 71 and 75. See also page 112 for an example of an explicitly CBT service, and page 121 for a CBT / DBT paper.
